Project 1
Paint Elevation
For my first project I chose a painting of a curtain out of the provided book of different projects. As a student with an emphasis in costume design, I wanted to use this project to work on portraying fabric and focus on the use of highlights and shadows.

After tracing out the folds of the curtain I painted the base blue, blending the highlights and shadow.

I painted the top of the curtain with the same blending technique I used previously on the main part.

After tracing the outline of the rope I filled it in with the base color.

The final two steps were adding the shadow of the ropes and sealing the entire painting with wax. The wax reacted poorly with the remaining chalk and gave left a milky appearance.
Step 1 was painting the gradient background. I mixed three different shades of grey and starting with the darkest at the top I blended them down, adding some white to the bottom.

Outlining the top of the curtain was one of my biggest challenges, because of the curved "S" shaped that defined the way the fabric folded over itself.

Next I added the gold trim.

Then, using the highlight and shadow colors I painted the braids of the rope. This was a little challenging for me because it took me a while to figure out the spacing and width of the "S" shape of the highlight.

To fix the the problem the wax created, I went over everything again with polyvinyl acetate, which gave a nice glossy finish.
